The Dictionary of Ulster Biography is about people associated with the historic nine counties of Ulster and includes those who were born here, or lived or worked here and who have distinguished themselves in some way. The aim where possible is to describe their lives and achievements from a local perspective.
The successor to the 1993 edition of the same works, this site comprises a large volume of historic records. In addition to the text and images for each record, there are also numerous dates reeating to births, deaths, and notable events. This presented a challenge to provide an easy-to-use but very powerful and intelligent search mechanism.
Since this site was building on an existing database, it was crucial to be able to perform data imports to save time and effort, and indeed the site launched with in excess of 1500 records which had been automatically imported from Excel spreadsheets. As the database grows, the site also needed to be scalable to deal with many thousands of records without impacting performance.
